Dr. Charles Mitchell presents research at ISET

Charles Mitchell, MD, program year three, R2 Diagnostic Radiology Resident, recently attended the International Symposium on Endovascular Therapy (ISET). Dr. Mitchell provided a poster presentation titled, "Assessing Procedural Excellence in Mechanical Aspiration Thrombectomy for Pulmonary Embolisms in the Community Hospital Setting," at the conference.
Dr. Mitchell took a moment to reflect on his experience at ISET; that reflection follows.
“This conference gave an in-depth overview of the variety of techniques and technologies available to conduct endovascular therapies for pulmonary embolisms, deep vein thromboses, arterial aneurysms, arteriovenous fistulas, peripheral artery disease, and more.
I was surprised by how many different embolic materials exist which (allegedly) all have similar efficacy, as well as the engineering that goes behind the many different catheter tips and stents. I also reconnected with my clinical knowledge, which surely will be used when I am on IR service.
The live cases gave me a real time opportunity to see the different ways in which a case can be approached, which will inform my understanding of cases and techniques during my IR rotations. The hands-on workshops primed my back and front table skills for when I get to engage in cases while on service.
This knowledge will also inform my diagnostic abilities, as I now better understand the work that goes into the post operative scans, including what kinds of outcomes and complications to expect. I also reconnected with my former medical school friends and former mentors, which was personally rewarding.”
Dr. Mitchell’s mentor is David Thayer, MD, PhD, and his trip was funded by the Rohrmann Endowment for Radiology Residents.
