OVERVIEW

The IR research training pathway is a longitudinal research mentorship program intended to create the next generation of IR physician scientists within the confines of the existing integrated IR residency without needing to take extra time. Trainees in the program will get dedicated research resources including physician scientist mentors, engineers, teams of graduate students, access to a dedicated biostatistician, and research coordinators. The goal is for trainees to learn how to do longitudinal high impact projects in collaboration with engineers and clinical trialists. The program is highly customizable, with graduates crafting the training program to meet their academic interests, and trainees will be directly mentored by Dr. Avik Som and Dr. Wayne Monsky in IR and take advantage of the 1500 sq feet of basic science lab space dedicated to IR research science. Types of research include translational work and phase 1/2 clinical trials. Please reach out to Dr. Som at aviksom@uw.edu with any questions.  

Uniquely, UW IR has a particularly close partnership with the school of engineering, with joint faculty and students available to invent and create new innovations. The IR/MSE (material science and engineering) program also has an entrepreneurship-in-residence program to enable clinical translation for first in man trials. All trainees are invited to quarterly research happy hours, and research trainees will get once per month direct mentorship from a faculty IR mentor from year 1 through graduation working on projects throughout the entirety of clinical training. Students will be supported to apply for RSNA and SIR grants for resident trainees and supported to go to scientific conference both radiology and non-radiology related.

No, as there is no additional year. This is purely a research mentorship track. 

i don't know if i want to be an academic ir, should i still apply?

Much of IR innovation happens in private practice as well, device development to first in man trials. Knowing how to do so during training enables potential leadership roles for graduates.
