Professor Emeritus Chun Yuan, PhD, has been awarded the UW Radiology Department 2025 Faculty Mentoring Award. Dr. Yuan is a former Vice-Chair of Global Affairs and past director of the Vascular Imaging Lab.

Dr. Yuan has cultivated the careers of many students, fellows, and faculty across the Radiology, Electrical and Bioengineering Departments at the University of Washington and at multiple other institutions.

Dr. Yuan mentored near 40 Radiology faculty members, over 50 post-doctoral fellows, almost 40 graduate students and multiple medical students over the years.

Many of his mentees have grown into NIH-funded investigators, global radiology leaders and visionaries in the field of medicine and science.

The various testimonials given on behalf of Dr. Yuan speak for themselves:

"I and many others who have come through the Vascular Imaging Lab owe a great debt to Dr. Chun Yuan for his mentorship through the years, and we have been able to achieve so much more through his support than we would have been able to otherwise."

"Professor Yuan is a mentor who leads by example. He actively engages in one-on-one mentoring, supports collaborative projects, and encourages participation in academic development activities.”

"[Dr. Yuan] has provided mentorship at exactly the scale needed at each step of my career ranging from teaching the basics at a student level, to gradually supporting my ability to work independently, then engaging in leadership activities, and providing me with career advancing opportunities when I was ready."

"Professor Yuan promotes an inclusive, respectful and collaborative research culture. He is particularly dedicated to mentoring individuals from diverse backgrounds, including international scholars."

"[Dr. Yuan] mentored both men and women from many countries, including individuals from India, China, Japan, Turkey, and Egypt, those that would not have had opportunities similar to those that he provided.”

Dr. Yuan pioneered multiple high-resolution MRI techniques to detect vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques and led numerous MRI studies examining carotid atherosclerosis. He has over 600 articles in peer-reviewed journals and is a grant reviewer for top national and international funding institutions: National Institutes of Health, Canada Research Chairs, Scottish Clinical Academic Fellowship, VA Merit Grant, Canadian Institute of Health Research, AHA and RSNA.

The purpose of the Faculty Mentoring Award is to recognize a faculty member with an exemplary record of mentoring within our department.

Different than the Resident Mentoring Award, the new award is a peer-recognition award and considers mentoring efforts directed towards faculty, residents, fellows, postdoctoral scholars, medical students, and graduate students.

Nominees for the Faculty Mentoring Award are evaluated based on four main criteria:

  1. Commitment to mentorship
  2. Mentorship activities
  3. Impact on mentees' careers
  4. Inclusive excellence

Dr. Amir Iravani and Dr. Bahar Mansoori were also nominated for the award and received honorable mentions.
