Biography
Dr. Westphalen is the Section Chief of Abdominal Imaging and Professor of Radiology, Urology, and Radiation Oncology at the University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.
Dr. Westphalen earned his MD from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in 1995, completed his radiology residency in Brazil, and went on to complete a fellowship in Abdominal Imaging at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in 2005. He also holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Research (MAS) from UCSF and a PhD in Surgical Sciences (Urology) from Universidade Federal do Sul, awarded in 2012.
He previously served on the UCSF faculty, where he directed the Clinical Prostate MR Imaging Program, chaired the MR Safety Committee, and was an active member of the Clinical Research and Prostate Cancer Imaging teams.
Dr. Westphalen’s research focuses on the use of advanced imaging technologies and artificial intelligence to improve the diagnosis and management of prostate and other genitourinary cancers. He has authored nearly 200 peer-reviewed publications and continues to lead innovations in prostate MRI.
Recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in prostate cancer imaging, Dr. Westphalen has collaborated extensively with colleagues across radiology, urology, radiation oncology, and oncology, both in the U.S. and abroad.
He plays an active role in professional societies, currently serving as the Portfolio Director for Internal & External Relations at the Society of Abdominal Radiology (SAR). He is the former chair of the RSNA Genitourinary Scientific Program Committee and contributes to the ARRS International Relations Committee, among others. He also maintains active collaborations through the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (FHCC), the Institute for Prostate Cancer Research (IPCR), and with clinical and research colleagues in urology and radiation oncology at the University of Washington.
